Sexuality and Relationship Education for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) Who Have Experienced Sexual Trauma

Participants will delve into the impact of sexual trauma on individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) from both the perspectives of victims and, in some cases, perpetrators. We will explore strategies for trauma-informed approaches, teaching bodily autonomy, self-esteem, emotional regulation, and boundary setting.

Through case studies, participants will explore best practices in educating survivors about healthy sexuality, sexual development, and fostering supportive environments for healing. This comprehensive approach will equip participants with the tools and understanding necessary to provide sexuality education that is both healing and empowering for individuals with I/DD who have experienced sexual trauma.

Objectives:

• Impact of Sexual Abuse on Sexual Development: Participants will describe how sexual abuse, whether as a victim or perpetrator, affects the sexual development of individuals with I/DD.
• Messages for Healing and Recovery: Participants will identify the critical messages that aid in the healing and recovery process for survivors of sexual trauma.
• Teaching Healthy Sexuality for Future Relationships: Participants will discuss key messages and concepts to teach survivors to help them form healthy relationships and develop a positive sense of sexuality

Participants will apply these messages and concepts to real-world scenarios through case studies, enhancing their ability to be effective and supportive educators or caregivers.

Katherine McLaughlin, M.Ed., AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator, is the Founder, CEO and Lead Trainer for Elevatus Training. She is the author of, Sexuality Education for People with Developmental Disabilities curriculum. Karyn Harvey, Ph.D

Karyn Harvey, Ph.D, has worked as a clinician in the field of intellectual disabilities for over 35 years. She has her Ph.D. in Applied Developmental Psychology from the University of Maryland. She has written three books: “Positive Identity Development, Trauma –Informed Behavioral Interventions and Trauma and Healing”. She has a private practice and does therapy with people with intellectual disabilities. In addition, she regularly conducts trainings on trauma-informed support for people with IDD, trauma-informed leadership, and trauma-informed behavioral interventions for both state and individual organizations throughout the US and Canada. She also conducts a train the trainer program and has trained over 120 trainers throughout the US and Canada.
