Volunteering is a wonderful way for our program participants to engage with our communities while also building important life skills.
Over the past 3 months, participants from the Rosewood day programs in Danvers have been averaging over 80 volunteer hours each month. Recently, Rosewood recruited day program volunteers to cook lasagnas for Lasagna Love, a global non-profit that delivers home-cooked lasagna to families and households in need.
While participating in this volunteerism opportunity, Bridgewell day program participants have also gained useful life skills they can apply at home.
“This group has been working so hard on multiple skills while doing this volunteer activity,” says Molli Marshall, Director of Day Habilitation Operations at Bridgewell. “Hygiene prior to cooking, cooking skills, following directions, following recipes, social skills when delivering the meal, safety skills when it comes to cooking and being out in the community, budgeting and how to purchase items, the list goes on and on.”
This project has also allowed the day programs to partner with Bridgewell residential programs for deliveries. Bridgewell has made several lasagnas to date and is planning to continue this partnership with Lasagna Love indefinitely.
More volunteer activities on the horizon include an eco-brick project and helping at a local temple, all of which are wonderful ways to help our communities while also building particularly important life skills.
Special thanks to Lasagna Love for their generosity and for letting local volunteers such as the ones at Bridgewell make delicious lasagna for the community. For more information, you can visit them on their website at lasagnalove.org.
