Eating disorders fall under the category of "emotional disorders," meaning that individuals who struggle often tend to avoid situations that bring up difficult or uncomfortable emotions. Because avoidance often serves as a maintaining factor for emotional disorders, it is essential to incorporate interventions that promote emotional approach rather than avoidance. Doing so can increase emotional tolerance and reduce reliance on eating disorder behaviors as coping strategies.

Children who act out sexually can present a challenging and complex diagnostic picture. This workshop will present a typology of sexual behavior problems in children, contrasting each category to what would be developmentally usual and expected. Implications for placements and treatment planning will be discussed for impulsive, attachment-seeking, neuro-atypical, trauma reactive, compulsive and exploitative sexual behaviors. We will focus on children in alternative care such as foster care, special school settings, residential treatment centers and inpatient hospitals. |
