PEABODY, MA — Bridgewell, a nonprofit social and human services organization serving northeastern Massachusetts, has been awarded a three-year CARF accreditation in 10 of its person-centered programs. The Peabody-based organization said the accreditation reflects performance against internationally recognized benchmarks for standards of care and quality of services. According to Bridgewell, the CARF site survey took place in April 2026 and involved a three-day review process. During that process, a team of surveyors visited programs, observed business operations and service delivery, and reviewed policies, financial statements, recordkeeping, and program documentation.

Sheckman practiced internal and infectious disease medicine for more than four decades, most recently at North Shore Physicians Group, now part of Mass General Brigham. He was a partner and served as medical director for 25 years. Now retired, Sheckman was also the hospital epidemiologist of Lynn and Union Hospitals.

LYNN – Heather Fahey had been drinking since she was 13. Throughout her 20s, she simply described herself as a “party girl,” but she eventually realized that searching for the nearest liquor store at 9 in the morning was not normal. “I lost a lot of friends, a lot of family. I lost myself. I didn’t enjoy life,” Fahey said. In 2022, Fahey found out she was pregnant with her 2-year-old son Grayson, while she was almost six months along. She joined Bridgewell Women’s Program at Johnson Street upon realizing she needed more long-term treatment after Grayson was removed from her custody.

Ayer has been blind since birth and has intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The first 40 years or so years of her life were spent in varied institutions, including state “schools” for people with IDD and schools for the blind. Ayer remarkably transitioned to community living and has achieved an age that would have seemed impossible at the time of institutionalization, when people with IDD routinely passed away in their 30s.

We each seemed well-suited and properly motivated for a partnership to put people with disabilities to work. One of us manages a nonprofit agency, Bridgewell, that helps individuals with disabilities, including intellectual and developmental disabilities, to acquire independence, which can include working for a private employer with some supports. The other operates a pharmacy business, Pelmeds, that dispenses and delivers prescriptions to varied customers, including residential programs that serve people with disabilities.
